The Road to Hana
From My time in Maui in Hana, United States on Nov 18 '08
Ahh..road trips...there is nothing like them...especially on an Amador road trip. It is about 50 miles to Hana, which doesn't seem very far, but on a two lane road with tourists you do the math. I forgot to mention the switchbacks there are a lot of them, I don't advise the ride if you get car sick easily. But, I don't think we ever went more than twenty minutes with out stopping to look at or take a picture of something so you can get plenty of air. Our first stop was in Pa'ia we had coffee and used the facilities at this really cute coffee house. It was great, there is nothing like sitting out in front of a cafe and watching people go by. I never thought for a minute I would be sitting with my back to a near fist fight at 8 in the morning. You can't beat people watching. Oh - coffee and a bran muffin at the beginning of a road trip never a good idea. So our second stop was at a scenic rest stop. But the view was nice. Then, there after we stopped at every waterfall or lookout imaginable. Oh - if you are going to take the road to Hana pack a lunch. You literally have one restaruant, a market, a side fo the road bbq and a lunch truck to choose from if you wait to eat in Hana. It took us five hours to get to Hana from Pa'ia. I guess you do have options but not too many. If you keep going you reach the Seven Pools. They are magnificent although one has to be up for 8 miles of two way cliffside driving on a tiny road...not for the impatient or faint of heart. The trip back was much quicker we didn't stop, but with sporadic rainfall and the insecure driver in front of us it still took about two hours to get back. I heard people say you only take the road to Hana once...and they have shirts that say I survived the road to Hana...but I don't know what they are talking about the views are great and there is plenty to see... you just have to enjoy a long drive.
