In order to get to our final destination, Rock Island, we had to stop over on Washington Island. To get there, we took a car ferry from the Northport Pier. The ferry ride in itself was very intriguing; we could see the skeletons of trees on an island that was devastated by a bird population.

Once on the island there is plenty to do. We started with lunch at Nelsen's Hall, which was delicious, filling, and not too expensive. From there, we visited a rock beach, a recreation of a Norwegian church from the 11th century, climbed a lookout tower, and eventually made our way to the northeast corner of the island to catch the ferry to Rock Island.

The wheat grown on Washington Island is used by Madison's Capital Brewery.

An interesting fact about Washington Island is that the wheat grown on the island is used by Capital Brewery (located in Madison, WI) to make their wonderful Island Wheat Beer.
