After just 3.5 hours of sleep we were up and ready to be picked up by the minibus to take us to the Grand Canyon at 6.00 a.m, both knackered! Headed out of Las Vegas and drove over Hoover Dam where we stopped for 10 minutes to take some pictures. Currently they are building a highway that bridges the Colorado River and the Hoover Dam on massive stilts. When it's finished in 2008 the public will not drive over the dam again. The dam is massive, it used to be the biggest inthe world but is now only 20th or so! We then headed on to the famous Route 66 and visted 'Hackberry General Store' where the owners have collected memorabelia of Route 66, Elvis, Marylin Monroe, and the whole store looks like it's still the 50's! Eventually we got to the Grand Canyon at 1.20p.m having had our ears bent for 6 hours by the driver who spoke non stop but we couldn't understand what he was saying most of the time....great when you want to sleep! The Grand Canyon is mind-blowing, something you just have to see. It's hard to understand just how big it is. A Park Ranger said that it was a 10 mile hike to the bottom of the canyon where there's a ranch people live / can stay on and it's 25 degress hotter down there than at the top (bear in mind it was 40 degress + at the top!) We took loads of pictures but I doubt they will do the canyon justice, it's so amazing. We spent so much time in awe at the place that we were very nearly late meeting back at the minibus at 3.30! Thankfully the driver shut up all the way back to Vegas. Got back to our hostel at 9.15 grabbed dinner and did our washing / drying. If we were tired this morning we were shattered now!
