Day 4 we head through Guatemala City and the scenic town of Antigua past smoking volcanoes and into the Guatemalan highlands. This is land of the Quiche indians who still largely dress in bright colored costumes and speak Spanish as a second language if at all.

While here you could consider climbing one of the active volcanoes- something I'm thinking of doing this time around.

Antigua is the town most Americans seem to have visited in Guatemala and it's pretty.... boring in my opinion. But some people really like it so if you feel drawn that way...

Also Guatemala City is a place I've been wanting to go back to, our last trip we avoided it because of what the guidebooks have to say then when we were driving to the airport we drove through the center of the city and it was so alive, I wished I had seen that side of it earlier when we weren't late for our flight!

The day will end us up in Lago de Atitlan, a lake in the crater of an ancient volcano and one of the deepest lakes in the world. We loved our last visit here and it is a very beautiful place.
