My first 3 days in Dar were consumed by the Co-Curriculum Development Work Shop at Muhimbili University. It consisted of representatives from Muhimbili, Makerere University in Uganda, University of Nairobi and the Methodist University in Kenya and from Tufts in Boston. Everyone was working together on a grant proposal to integrate the public health and other health related curricula of the 4 universties via an online system (TUSK). For me it was a great way to learn about real world public health conferences and grant writing from the inside as well as establish contacts in the field. (If you want to know anything more about the conference please feel free to email me but I don't want to bore anyone else who might be reading this)
On a more selfish note I very much ejoyed being spoiled by air conditioning and excellent free food. I unneccessarily ate as if I weren't sure when I would see my next meal although it was a pleasant addition to the complimentary "breakfast" at the hostel of bread (toast if you're lucky enough to have electricity) and margarine.
Every night after the conference I went out with the Tufts faculty to some very nice dinners (Thanks again!) and on the last night it was Tanzania night at the hotel. I discovered that while I hate coconut the "milk" itself isn't that bad. I hope you enjoy the pictures of the festivities. There's a lot more but I didn't take the pictures. For those of you who know JKG make sure to take a close look as he "gettin' down" in one photo :)
