'Itchy bags!'
From Hambantota Adventures! in Hambantota, Sri Lanka on Jan 17 '08
Back in pre-school again with nearly all being good as gold, except little Premodith. All morning long he cried, bless him! Was ducks today that they coloured in and are easing back in beginning their exercises, but in the school this time. Had hoppers and bananas for breakfast, so had to have a second breakfast after porridge (has to be done, when the Sri Lankan breakys are so much different and tasty!). Found out that it’s not just us English that find it hard to communicate with the children, but also Chandima! (the other pre-school teacher). Some kids only speak Tamil and not Sinhalese and Chandima doesn’t speak Tamil! The others today got to work on touching up jobs in the house, along with painting themselves!
Had to go to the doctor's in the afternoon as my under my arm 3 more have appeared and I wanted to make sure that they weren't abscesses reappearing again! Unfortunately, it was just that and had to wait till Monday to see the consultant to see how I could get rid of them.
Later Gourie asked us for ‘itchy bags’ which we soon found out she meant strong bags! She also found a calendar that had photos of Sri Lankan women and one lady was bathing with a towel round her. She then found it really funny that us English bathe with no clothes on! I was very privileged to speak to Paroti’s daughter Raake, who’s 16 and speaks really good English as she’s studying up in Kandy. Unfortunately she only comes down to Hambantota once a year, which I’m sure the family misses her very much. But Paroti is getting better at her English as she sits in on Katy’s classes, so can now tell the time.
