Ghent is apprently the unsung city in Belgium, competeing against the likes of Bruges, Brussels and Antwerp, but I can kind of see why.
Another lone female traveller (Shelly from Essex) had asked to tag along with me, (yay Ithought, someone to go with) so off we went on the 35 min (reality 1 hour) train ride to Ghent. With my now trusty use-it guide (I had already circled the day before sitting in the lovely sunshine of the Jardin all the places I wanted to go) we trekked the almost 2km to the Historic Centre.
The castle is fake you know

First stop the most beautiful view. Umm I'm not so sure, but I take a picture anyway. The canal is rather pretty and as it's a nice day there are lots of young people and couples sitting on the steps listening to music, chatting, eating and sunning themselves.
We walk along the canal and get to the fake castle. Ok it is a castle its just been "modifyed" the roof used to be flat and didn't have all those towers and things, if some peasant from the medieval times was to see it now, they wouldn't recognise it (so it says in the use-it guide)
The most beautiful tree (Ghent has the most beautiful of everything it seems) a big dissapointment. It's a tree so I was expecting something rather special-imagine my dissapointment. It was rather big though, I give it that (actually it was huge).
I'm not climbing up any more belfrys - at least for a few days, my thighs still hurt from before, so I just took pictures of the many churches with their many towers (all but one that is).
Saw the most beautiful building -again I wasn't too impressed, although it was pretty, but it being turned into a shopping centre (as the former most beautiful post office was) kind of spoils things.
The tallest builing in Ghent (the architect cheater, as it's on the tallest bit of land) is home to over 2 million books, and you can see in the windows all the shelves staight up to the top.
The day - late afternoon anyway ended with a visit to SMAK thats an art museum, modern art to be exact. What can I say; it was very intersting, weird, confusing all those things that modern art is. At least I can say I have seem Vannesa Paradis and Coco Chanel's bidet, lol.
