Back in the home county!
From Ulster Travels in Armagh, United Kingdom on May 10 '08
My original plan was to see the Giant's Causeway on the Sunday of my trip, and then see Armagh and also Tandragee Castle on Monday since more buses would be running. Well, I had done all this research, but it turns out that the tour was not running until July. So I had to go to Armagh on Sunday. I had some time so I went on the computer and had a good breakfast. I took the next bus to Armagh then. The reason I wanted to go to Armagh was because that is where the Hanlon family is supposed to have come from. The city is known as one of the oldest in Ireland, and has many churches, parks, and Celtic sights. Also, Tandragee Castle was supposed to be the site of the O'Hanlon Castle. Well, I get there and everything was closed, of course it is still Ireland. I walked around taking pictures, and I finally found a hotel that was open and got a map finally. I went to the Palace Stables and Park. I was then going to the Emain Macha Celtic Fort. I was walking there, and everything looked like the mini Shankill Road. So i hurried out of there as fast as I could. I walked around some more, but everything was closed at it was pretty dead there. Also, I could not get to Tandragee Castle because the buses never run to the villages on Sunday, it would cost 40 pounds, and they castle was closed as well. I was still happy to see the area where the family is from.
I got back to Belfast early. I wanted to check out a couple of famous bars before going back. I stopped into the Duke of York bar which is where Gerry Adams used to bartend. Then I went to the place next door, and I was lucky to find a live band there that night. I headed back early that night because I had to catch a train at 6:45am to the Giant's Causeway.
