March 5th and 6th

A 45 minute flight took us to Phnom Penh where we visited Toul Sleng (S-21).  This was originally a school, but was turned into a prison from 1975-1979 when the Khmer Rouge lead by Pol Pot took over the country, killing all of the previous Political Leaders within days and imprisoning many of their own people, torturing and killing them. Many people were sent to the country to work in the fields and were given little to eat. About 2 Million people died during this time. Many were killed at the Killing Fields and similar sights throughout the country. It is heart wrenching to see photos of every person that was brought to the prison (including men, women and children). There were 15,000 people in this particular prison, all  were tortured and all but 7 were  killed. There are many mass graves with hundreds of people in each grave. The memorial building is about 4 stories high with shelves covered in human skulls. It again is a very heart wrenching experience.

Our hotel in Phnom Penh was across the street from the river.  The street was lined with many restaurants and bars, all of which housed a few of the local RATS!  While sitting at a sidewalk bar and trying to enjoy our drink we had many rats running through our legs.  Well, you can well imagine the joy Vicki felt in seeing all of the cute little creatures.
