After seeing all the movies and studying it in school it was different to what I’d expected. ANZAC Cove looked so pretty with sparkling blue sea and white sands. It was also a lot smaller than I’d imagined and the hill wasn’t as steep, but that’s due to a road being made and erosion. It was moving wandering through the various cemeteries, especially seeing the ages of those who died, most were younger than us.
While at One Tree Hill (The NZ Monument) our guide found a bullet casing on the ground, after all this time and so many visitors there’s still war rubbish… I was amazed by the respect and friendship shown to Kiwis and Aussies by Turks because of the ANZAC agreement, despite the fact that we killed each others men. Our guide was telling us that even during the war, when it was at a standstill in winter and the men were dug in the trenches, they traded food with the enemy by throwing cans to each other...
