The even BIGGER climb!!
From Sri Lanka Oxfam Challenge - February 2006 in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka on Feb 22 '06
Another hard day of hill climbing which led us to the English Colonial style town on Nuwara Eliya, situated almost 2000m above sea level. It is often referred to as 'Little England' with its English style houses, country club and cool climate.
As we left Bandarawela I was surprised to find we spent the next 15km traveling downhill ... a little confusing given that we were meant to rise about 1000m today!! Soon after I found reality kicking in with the enjoyable declines quickly turning into inclines. It was tough riding, but enjoyable with the cooler climate and beautiful scenery. Tea plantations and rice fields became more predominate while the climate cooled to produce a refreshing breeze.
As we rose over the last of the inclines the scenery opened up to Nuwara Eliya situated on the edge of lake along with surrounding farms. It was quite a picturesque and beautiful little town. After a short break at our hotel we headed to a tea plantation that was situated nearby. It was quite interesting once we FINALLY got in … they were incredibly unorganized and couldn’t deal with more than a few people.
After dinner we ventured out to a pub for a few drinks … it wasn’t quite as picturesque as the town!! It was seedy and very male orientated … it may be worth noting we were at the “better” one, according to our guides anyway. I recommend sticking to the hotel pubs.
