I am writing about another unique location on Lantau island (you may recall my entry about the Big Buddha on Lantau). Tai O is a remote fishing village on the western tip of the island. Carrie was here for Christmas vacation and we took a trip to say hello to the Big Buddha, then we ventured on to Tai O. This village is well known here for its stilt houses perched over a tidal creek. At one time it was Lantau's biggest village. The Tanka Boat people make a living from fishing and trading salt with China. The Tanka is an ethnic group in China that arrived in Hong Kong around the 7-9th century. Decendents of these people still live in Tai O. It was an amazing authentic Chinese fishing village that we strolled through on this sunny afternoon.
