Day 5 - Barcelona, Spain - June 7
From Western Europe Peregrination in Barcelona, Spain on Jun 06 '07
We started off the day by walking to las ramblas, once again, to eat breakfast and upload our information to the blog at the internet cafe. While we were walking down las ramblas there were many entertainers on the side of the street, as usual. The funniest of which was a small dog dressed up and wearing sunglasses that would howl to the music that his master played. Absolutely hilarious.
One of the most important sights to see in Barcelona is of course the great works of Gaudi. The city has spectacular buildings designed and built by Gaudi that can be reached easily by subway. We decided we would make a day of seeing all of his greatest additions to the city. Our first stop was a luxurious apartment building by Gaudi in a very posh section of Barcelona. This building was situated on a street that is comparable to fifth avenue in New York City; let´s just say Taylor felt right at home amongst Gucci, Burberry, and Chanel. We played games while window shopping where I would have to guess what she would want most out of each window. It´s good to dream. Next stop was Casa Batllo also designed by Gaudi and then on to Casa Mila. To rest our feet after the rigorous walking we stopped at familiar territory; Starbucks. Here we met some American teenagers traveling with their parents whom were all from California. They were nice kids and we shared a long chat about all of our adventures. The young man bought absynthe and a switch blade that he was trying to bring back into the states, both illegal. After this we went back to our hostel, said goodbye to the very friendly owner and took our luggage onto the subway over to the train station. This was the longest journey we had with our backpacks yet. We were forced to walk about a mile to the subway station and then stand in the subway for about 20 minutes. Our legs were burning more than ever even. We got onto our overnight train and headed off to our next destination, Madrid. This wasn´t a very enjoyable experience as our cab, though very comfortable, contained a faint smell of vomit. Shaun tried desperately to communicate this with the Spanish conductor who spoke absolutely no English whatsoever. He brushed up on his skills in charades in which the whole ordeal concluded with the conductor thinking that Shaun had to throw up.
