· Tuesday 18th Sep – Friday 28th Sep (2 weeks work). Our first day of work… HOLY SHIT!!!! We have never been so sore, tired & dirty. A reality check for sure. We normally both have pretty ‘on the go’ jobs at home- on our feet all day but this took the cake! We weren’t sure we could handle such physical and quick work for the 2 weeks but as the days went by, we met some wonderful people, had many of laughs (generally by piffing slugs or peat at each other) and learnt so much. It all came together and the days began to go quicker. That was the plan, to work somewhere together, be completely out of our comfort zones, learn something new and see if we would sink or swim. Being too proud once again and also knowing we were flying the Aussie flag, we worked ourselves to the bone and quickly earnt the respect of the field. Our jobs over the 2 weeks included weeding (knees and back copped a flogging here. We found it funny tho that we don’t even like loosing ‘the race’ for weeding the layes against the other workers- haha we’re both shocking!!), packing, potting, tagging, making trolleys, preparing orders plus so much more, lifting etc etc. All this in the inclement Scottish weather- bluddy cold, rainy and unpredictable in other words! In all, we also learnt the Scottish wit ‘eiy’, Polish greetings and Latvian swear words. A great mix of people young and mid aged. We take our hats off to those who work at Highland Heathers- they work bluddy hard and generally still with a smile. Our hours per day were 8am to 5pm, hour off for lunch which generally felt like about 20 mins. 5 days on, 1 day off, 5 days on. In finishing up our short stint, we spent the last night (Friday) enjoying a drink with our new Polish friends and the next day said farewell to our Latvian friends. We continued on our journey the Saturday morning. We deserve a good drink and meal after out efforts- where better to get that from…bring on Oktoberfest!
