Another wonderful weekend
From My Journey begins in Santiago, Chile on May 17 '07
I am sure you are getting bored of hearing about my weekends but this weekend i did many things for the first time. Being a long weekend Felipe and I were determined to make the most of it, and Felipe being Felipe decided to fit as much as he could in one weekend. There was no lie in.
Saturday was my first mini Spanish lesson given by Patty. Felipe went to football and I stayed with Patty, eating pie, cheese cake and of course sharing a glass of wine. As soon as he came back we were on our way to my first Chilean football match supporting Felipe’s team Universidad Catholic, I am sure you can work out what the name is in English. The stadium wasn’t as big as the one in Brazil but it sure had the same atmosphere, I was told that this is because during the dictatorship this was the only place where people could express themselves, and of course boys fascination with balls. It was certainly lively, and a very good game, at the end of it I was proficient in saying ooo and ah in a Spanish accent, such good fun. We won of course and are very close to being in the final of the championship and there is no way that I am missing that.
I opened the door to see gleaming eyes looking at me. Felipe took my hand, I protested at first of course, and was luckily enough to be allowed to watch one dance before my attempt.
After having more pie we made our way to the cost where Felipe’s uncle and aunty live. Enrique and Marta have lived in Australia for the last thirty odd years so talking English was not a problem. Los Cruces is the name of the small beach town which is beautiful. I woke up every morning with the view of the sea only about five hundred meters away, so close you could hear the sound of the waves splashing against the rocks, breath taking.
The next day after a good night’s sleep we made our way to Melipilla, to see the piece of land that Enrique had just brought. From there we went to Susan and Gonzalez’s house to enjoy one of the best evenings so far of my trip. While the large amount of meat was cooking on the BBQ we went out for a ride on the horses. When we came back the wine was in full flow and the guitar was out. Music is so prominent here that I have even started to have my own favourites, although I have a little difficultly remembering the words. After a good chat, drink and sing song the dancing began. As you already know I was excused the last time but this time there was no way I was leaving without dancing Quaker with Felipe. I was sitting outside when I started to hear my name being chanted. Boom boom, boom, boom went my heart. I already knew they were dancing from the vibrations I felt through the wooden floor. I opened the door to see gleaming eyes looking at me. Felipe took my hand, I protested at first of course, and was luckily enough to be allowed to watch one dance before my attempt. So how did it go? Well I have already told you that I have become strangely immune to the red, hot flushed face but I did feel a little under pressure seen as Felipe can dance so well. I wasn’t brilliant but I didn’t fall over. It was a perfect day and when it was time to go I didn’t want to leave.
Monday came too soon for my liking but we enjoyed the last day of the long weekend by relaxing and nursing our head. We had fish a chips, typically English, and I even ate the fish which was delicious, and it wasn’t like fish fingers it had the skin and everything, my taste buds were going wild. I even had time to teach Felipe Sudoku although he didn’t need my help. A lovely end to a lovely weekend. I wonder what this weekend has in store; I already know that I have a BBQ to go to with Felipe’s football team who knows what will follow……. I’ve danced quaker, experienced my first earthquake, jumped around like a lunatic in a Chilean football stadium and eat fish!
