This unplanned event should have been left on the "things not to do list."  We were re-routed north through Canon City due to a large forest fire near La Veta Pass.  We decided to stop at the Royal Gorge bridge, just outside of Canon City.  Our first clue to avoid this area was the overwhelming display of tourist activities posted on billboards.  (And I thought the interstate to Wall Drug was bad)  Here's a clue to novice travelers....If the signage looks like it was created by me, or a five year old, avoid at all costs.  We headed in to the park which holds the bridge we intended on crossing for some great views.  The entrance revealed a carousel and some other carny activities before the opening of the bridge.  And then came the shock... 21 dollars per person to cross the bridge.  You got to be kidding.  I didn't feel this ripped off since we ate at Arby's for 14 dollars; beverage not included.  At least let me negotiate a better rate with the troll under the bridge.  Anne and I turned around, along with every other disappointed traveler, and headed back towards the car.  Total savings:42 dollars.

The trip wasn't a complete waste.  After some coaxing from Anne, we pulled over at Bishop Castle.  This is one of the craziest things I have ever seen, direct from Edward Scissorhands.  This free, yet questionable on the safety scale, attraction relied on donations to continue its' contruction.  Every step to the top of the towers made my crotch tingle.  Maybe it was because of all the signs posted every ten feet that read, "released from all liability."  Nevertheless, it was quite a structure.
