La Paloma
From Round The World Trip 2006-2007 in La Paloma, Uruguay on Mar 07 '07
Well, what a day this turned out to be. We had originally planned to visit Punta del Diablo a remote little place along the east coast of Uruguay, famous for its laid back attitude and lovely beaches etc. The day started off a disaster though when our hostel wake-up call was an hour late thus giving us no chance to make it to the bus station. We arrived 10 minutes after our bus had left (7.10am). With no way of getting a refund the girl behind the desk could only offer us the next bus (at 6pm) or the next bus which was going to Cabo Polonio. This place was highly recommended by Ale, so we felt we had nothing to loose. The bus was at 10am and was a 4 hour journey. We were quite looking forward to Cabo even though we completely unprepared for it - the place has no electricity or very little and most places you required your own linen which we didn't have.
Oh, and while all of this is going on, it's absolutely lashing out. It continued to rain the entire time we were on the bus with no chance of it stoping for the day. So, on checking our guide book we got off the bus at La Paloma. This town gets alot of visitors in January and February due to its nice beaches, location, and great weather. Plus it had one or two hostels.
A miserable day travelling to La Paloma..
We arrived at the hostel which given the day was a dull place, quite damp and cold with most of the people out surfing. La Paloma is also a surf / beach bum destination. So we pretty much sat around all day watching films and getting to know some of our fellow guests. Some massive thunder and lightening happening outside the lounge window. That night, we helped cook up a big meal for everyone and had a few drinks which was fun.
The next day we were on the road again heading to the famous Punta del Este for the weekend. Of course, the sun was shining brightly as we cursed ourselves knowing we would spend most of the time sitting on a bus.
