After a 130 kms cruise from Hanmer Springs, we arrived in Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island with a population of 300.000.
It has a traditional english university town feel to it, with the boys at Christ's College still wearing their striped blazers as well as the sight of punts along the river Avon.
We checked into The Old Countryhouse, a lovely restored suburban house. Here we only managed to get a 7-bed dorm (NZD 20), but we thought it was worth staying here at least one night.
The afternoon we spent walking around the center and relaxing at Cathedral Square.
The next day we checked into Drifters backpackers, just across the road. By far not as nice as The Old Countryhouse, but at least we had a double room again as last night was a nightmare. The owners are both from the UK and moved to NZ about 3 years ago. From what we could see, they had not done much with the place in all these years..
