The Greek ruined city of Pergamum, also called Pergamon and Bergama, is perched on a hilltop and a truly dramatic site. Settled in the 8th century BC, Alexander the Great’s generals ruled this important center.
Temple of Trajan – This white marble temple with tapered columns and stone foundation was completed around 117-138 AD.
Altar of Zeus – One of the largest temples in the complex, the altar was removed and painstakingly rebuilt at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin
Theatre – This 3rd century BC theatre had an estimated capacity of 10,000. It is now covered in grass and offers a view over the city.
Fly to Istanbul
Drive from Pergamum to Izmir and catch a 1-hour flight to Istanbul.
Turkish Airways flies all day from 5 am to 10 pm.
If you wish to have more time in Istanbul, you can skip Pergamum and take a morning flight.
