Day 5: Scuba Diving

Today I scuba dived. I´m no chicken, but it´s really scary. It´s more frightening than bungy jumping for sure. It was what they call a scuba diving baptism. They guide you and you don´t go too deep. All these fish kept following me around and trying to nibble on my fingers. I didn´t like that too much. They took a lot of photos of me and gave me the film, so I need to get it developed onto a CD to show you all. It was kind of an underwater photo shoot -- very professional with posses and all -- silly but fun. The reefs here are cool, but not as good as Mexico. Still, any snorkeling or scuba diving is wonderful.

Our group was around fifteen people. Half Brazilian and half International. There was a group of four very drunk Estonians (at 8 AM no less) and a Swedish couple. I was quickly adopted by a nice woman from Sao Paulo and the cutest Brazilian family. The daughter taught herself English by watching TV and using a dictionary. I kid you not, her English was amazing. She´s in university for psychology and it a uber nerd so I liked her a great deal. She helped me through the day with translating with other folks and we talked about Japan and anime -- she is also learning Japanese. As a single traveler, it´s pretty easy for others to initiate interaction.

Tomorrow I will head off for Pipa, a smaller beach village with no hostel. I think a couple days of relaxation are in order after all the buggies and snorkeling.

Wait a minute. So that means the Mexican kid from Smallville could have learned flawless English by watching TV. Turns out Smallville is even more progressive than I had originally assumed.
