Bridgette made me visit...but I liked it
From A Fantastic Journey in Bilbao, Spain on Mar 04 '07
Mar. 5, 2007 Bridgette really wanted to see the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao, even though we weren´t really sure what it was all about. I was along for the ride, but when I saw the museum it was worth the unknown. We approached the museum from the far side of the river, and it was an incredible building shining in the...almost sunshine. The whole outside is covered in titanium plates, glass and is formed of undulating waves. It´s kind of shaped like a boat, or a fish and see-through from the glass walls. We got inside and found the most wonderful treat ever (free audioguides). Two of the three floors were closed due to changes in exhibits, but we still took 3 hours to tour around. It turned out to be an art musuem, but the best part of the visit was the building itself. It was facintating to see how Frank Ghery came up with the idea and also to see his other projects.
After leaving the musuem, we had a few hours to wander around town before finally getting back to the hotel, hungry, because we couldn´t find any real restaurants in the whole city. There lots of smoky bar-cafes but no sit-down restaurants. We eventually figured out that was because it was only 7:00 when we looked for food...the locals eat dinner after 9:00.
Mar 6, 2007 We checked out of our hostel and headed for the train station. It was pouring rain, so we dropped our bags off at the lockers and headed out to the local (indoor) market. It was great to buy fresh food from the vendors, and we had a delicious lunch of sausage, cheese and bread. It was still raining, so we hid out at the train station most of the day, until the local theater opened, then we went to see a movie. We chose our movie based on the title being in English...maybe it wouldn´t be translated, but no such luck. It looked really good, and seemed to be very intersting, but I only got the major plot. If anyone is interested in seeing it with me when I get home, it´s called ¨Breaking and Entering¨ with Jude Law.
We took a night train from Bilbao to Madrid and arrived early in the morning for one day of seeing the sights before another night train to Lisbon.
