CLAIRE.

Things I have seen or done in Hong Kong.

So far there has been a direct correlation between the places we stay and the lingering smell of the dampness of someone who was here long ago.

Lantau Island.

Bamboo scaffolding. Builder of some of the world's tallest buildings.

A giant Buddha too tall to comprehend emerging through the smog.

A dog growling at us from atop of a roof.

A bus careering down a single-lane, two-way mountainous tobogan trail, pausing to let other oncoming traffic pass. My life flashing before my eyes.

A shabby, Changi-like youth hostel we didn't want to stay at. Walls covered in suspicious white stains, paint bubbling off.

Ashley Street, Kowloon. City of lights and expensive food.

A dinner/lunch of Pringles and Ribena.

Spent the day getting offers of 'guesthouse?', 'watch?', 'bag?', 'tailored suits?', which after sundown simultaneously changed to 'hash, hash, HASHISH!?'. Went on the 'The Peak' Tram Car (pimped by Jackie Chan). Was like an amazing rollecoaster too old to get up to a proper speed. Did the night markets. Our attempts at haggling were met by unamused looks. Hong Kong is expensive. Too expensive.
