We have arrived in Seattle. We left Portland tomorrow and travelled through Washington state (which involved many more trees – this is the ‘evergreen state’ after all) first to Olympia, the capital, and then to Seattle. Thelma felt very much at home in Washington as this is where she is from and was perfectly happy cruising up the interstate. Olympia is a small town but really pretty and nice. The capitol building was like a mini version of the one in Washington DC (oh, the Washington irony!!) and the town itself was chilled out and nice. We had lunch in a café and I managed to find hummous for the first time in the States – yay! Washington is quite an eco-friendly state and this shows in the people and the towns as they are fairly chilled out and cosmopolitan. After Olympia we drove the final 60 miles to Seattle and found our hotel which is pretty centrally located in downtown which is fantastic so I don’t have to drive to reach anywhere. This also means that I can drink for the first time in the trip which is something of a novelty! We decided that the only sensible thing to do was to hit the shops immediately and spent the afternoon pottering around Urban Outfitters and Old Navy. I managed to purchase a further 6 pairs of underwear to add to my growing collection (it is not an obsession, honestly!). Then it was definitely time for happy hour drinks so we wandered around to the sea front and the Pike Street Fish Market which we are going to visit properly tomorrow and had a couple of drinks in a nearby bar. After dinner in a nearby Irish Bar (which actually had really good restaurant food) we wandered back to our hotel (via another bar) which is where I write this now, watching re-runs of Friends. I know. Re-runs of Friends. Most unlike me. Tomorrow is definitely sight-seeing day before we venture another 160 miles north to Canada and Vancouver.
