As my plane approached Singapore and the city lights became brighter I was struck with a frightening thought. I really don't know a damn thing about SE Asia. I feel the blame for this rests firmly with my 10th grade social studies teacher. Anyway, Singapore is everything I've heard it was. Very clean very organized. The crosswalks have big digital counters on them so you know exactly how much time you have left to cross the street. There is an interesting blend of cultures here, Indian, Chinese, Malay. The British influence is obvious in the older architecture and grand hotels from the 1800s. Best of all food is cheap! There are huge 'hawker' stalls that all variety of Asian foods for about USD$1.50. I've been staying in the Little India part of town which has been great eating as well. Small Indian bakeries are all over. The air smells of curry and incense, with a touch of urine. Ahhhhh. I visited the massive shopping district with more malls than any one country should have. One of which contained the worlds biggest fountain, the 'Fountain of Wealth', a testament to Singapore’s financial success I guess. I think I'll head to Malaysia soon.
