Lamanai ruins
From Rich in the Americas! in Orange Walk, Belize on Mar 18 '06
Belize border control took absolutely ages. They can only seem to afford to pay 1 man to work very slowly. First impressions of Orange Walk weren't that great. Not a lot to do on Sunday, most places were shut and those that were open didn't seem that exciting. Stayed in a concrete box of a room, but it was clean and had cable TV!
Booked a tour to Lamanai for the next day. It was a bit pricey but Lamanai is supposed to be really nice and didn't want to waste the trip to Orange Walk.
The boat ride to Lamanai was pretty but didn't see any crocodiles, only bats and termite mounds. Did see a Jesus Lizard though (it's called a Jesus Lizard because it can walk on water!) Fast little bugger and didn't manage to get a picture of it. Just have to go to the Zoo when I get home!
Lamanai ruins were nice, not as impressive as Palenque but the guide showed us all the medicinal plants along the trail. Pretty good views from the top of the main pyramid.
The boat journey on the way back was fun. The engines broke down and we had to float down the river for an hour and a half before the guide had a mobile signal! Wouldn't have been too bad if one of the Americans on the boat hadn't insisted on telling the longest and worst jokes ever. He finally ran out of jokes after about 45 minutes (about 4 jokes worth). Didn't make it back to Orange Walk in time to get the bus to Belize City so stayed in a hotel on the river. The guy who owned it showed us pictures of 1 of the crocodiles in the river he had trained to come out of the river whenever he slapped the water a certain way with a paddle. Think Flipper but with bigger teeth!
