Munich: The Party

As we were about to leave Munich we decided we couldn't do so without a leaving thrash! We had a great bunch of fellow roomates at the hostel, 3 Canadian girls, 2 Canadian guys, a British chap and a girl from Kansas City. We persuaded them to come next door with us for the Wombat Hostels happy hour. We've kind of made it our local for a week!! Great pub and great people. Well, this was the beginning a our first party nite of the trip. So far we've been sort of stingy with the budget so thought we owed ourselves one night on the town. And what a boozy and memorable night this was to be. At Wombats we order a jub [1 and a half litres] each of beer - referred to in Munich as "liquid bread" as it is what the locals literally live on. Well, that jug didn't touch sides, so another jug found it's way to our table, then another... The antics we all got up to here would have made us welcome at any Oktoberfest party! By 10pm an exceedingly jolly lot departed Wombats to visit the oldest and most traditional beer garden in Munich - the Augustiner Keller - 10 minutes walk from our hostel. We thought we'd ruined our reputations at Wombats, but at Augustiner we threw our names away totally. Drinking games, down-downs, lying on the table cover in mugs!!, jokes, pranks, toasting glasses together so hard we broke one - and believe me, these are very heavy, thick mugs! All really quite childish and crazy but when in Munich, do as the locals do.... And I'm not even a seasoned beer drinker! That's all changing I think. Once we'd totally trashed our names, we joined the locals on the street and staggered back to the hostel. En route a German local, thinking we were a gullible lot of tourists, tried to hustle us into some club or other, but thankfully we weren't that far gone. Most of us crashed onto our beds in blissful oblivion and didn't surface until 10am.

Friday 5th May
A Boozy Party Nite
With exceedingly heavy heads, we all recalled our evenings escapades and unanimously voted it as one of the best nights jout in a long time. Great friends, great vibes, great fun and great beer in a great city. Will be remembered for a long time to come.
For the rest of the day we walked around the English Gardens and were succesful in seeing the crazy surfers! Surfing in the city has to be seen to be believed. All we manged to do was park off on the lawns, eating our crusty loaf with wonderful creamy cheese and tuna. No beer today. Back in the hostel 'the gang' congregated in the lounge to once again try and justify our previous nights antics. Why bother to do that any way 'cos we'd all repeat it again anyway!
