Great Faces, Great Places
From Looking for America in Watertown, United States on Aug 10 '06
We're in South Dakota!
Today we passed through the remainder of Iowa including Des Moines, and crossed over the border this evening. We are staying in a little town known as Watertown. We met some new friends today. First was Albert, the world's largest bull. He spoke to us and told us about himself and his importance to the town.
We slipped into Nebraska for lunch in Omaha, where we found a sandwich place and had some "Texas-style chili".
Next, while stopped at the visitor's center just after crossing the border into South Dakota, we were approached by a large biker. He asked if it was really our honeymoon, (he had seen the infamous "Honk For the Bride" window), and asked us to come over and have a hot dog or a soft drink. Apparently, this is Sturgis week, the world famous motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. He and his family were at the welcome center greeting bikers with free food and drinks as they entered the state. We joined them for lemonade and tea, and they were thrilled to learn about our trip. (Gator and the rest of the Follow the Fish group, thanks for the drinks and be sure to check out our photo!) They gave us some helpful tips on how to survive Sturgis week as a non-biker tourist.
