My Mum’s Birthday and arrival in decadent Cancun

Happy Birthday Mum! (I am looking at your bracelet and thinking of you a lot today). Oh my word, this morning I woke up to an extremely strong sulphur smelling apartment, that is a sign if ever I smelt one. I cannot wait to get out of here! Loaded with our 62Kg of baggage we headed out in search of a taxi and within 100 yards we luckily found one. Within an hour we were on an Ado bus back to “Mexico” this time bright eyed and bushy-tailed, alert and ready to enjoy the scenery. Lush green jungle and mountains surround occasional villages, where the bus stops and locals are aloud aboard to sell unidentifiable snacks. Observing through the bus window I see Mexican’s hanging out in thrown together homes. What a different existence, but I guess isolated out here in the jungle they don’t know much different other than their simple lives and here we are on our way to an all inclusive holiday in Cancun, the world is not a fair place. As we approached Mexico City the “ciudades perdidas” came in view. Thousands and thousands of homes as far as the eye can see up the mountainsides, all crammed together. Ranging from hastily constructed shanties to more permanent constructions. It really gives me some idea of the scale of this city, which has a population of 22 million. One taxi seguro later and we were checking in to our now domestic flight to Cancun with 12Kg too much baggage. It seems that our run of bad luck is not over. We handed over a ridiculous $158 then drank copious amounts of free beer on the plane in order to make up for being out of pocket. Oh well expenses will be minimal over the next few weeks. We were greeted with Pina Coladas at our hotel reception and the only way to describe our hotel is crazy. Every little detail is considered and overdone! This is way more luxury than I have ever experienced. Whilst I am incredibly excited to be here, after what I have seen today it just doesn’t sit quite right in my stomach!
