Rugby World Cup - Not just for rugby fans
From Backpacking in Europe in Cardiff, United Kingdom on Sep 30 '99
We arrived to an unexpected party in Cardiff, Wales, one that would fill every bed in the city on our second evening leaving us to stay up all night in a lounge. People filled the streets, bars, pretty much everywhere, to watch the Rugby World Cup quarter finals. Five minutes to game time the streets cleared and were so quiet you could've heard a pin drop. Silence washed over the city, and then the singing could be heard. Walking past the stadium, the glorious sound of fans singing in unison wafted out and filled the empty streets. A single man ran by, late for the game. Then, nothing. Silence.
I joined travellers in our hostel to watch the game in the bar. I ended up making friends with a deaf traveller from New Zealand and we proceeded to chat by writing notes back and forth. Parties continued after the game, and the Welsh fans continued to sing whenever they felt inclined - in the streets, pubs and parks. One extremely drunk gal in a bathroom stood up in her open doored stall with her knickers still down, to declare that she was only after one thing, like the lads. A huge party, that lasted a couple days. I think I would've liked Cardiff anyhow, with the friendly people and interesting language, but with Rugby World Cup, it was unforgettable.
