After our stay in La Fortuna for the weekend, the last week of our Spanish immersion program was to be spent in the touristy beach town of Playa Flamingo. The first thing I did upon arriving was rent a beach cruiser for the week with my two friends, Sarah and Melina. Through out the week I rode to school, grocery stores, and up and down the beaches. One day I rode to Playa Pan de Azucar, which is probably the cutest name ever for a beach. The beach was just a few kilometers north of Flamingo, but a hilly ride it was. The beach had to be only about forty yards wide, situated at the bottom of a cliff, with a fancy resort overlooking the ocean. While there I mainly smoked, napped, wrote, and took pictures of the trees and seashells. A good time to reflect on all the stuff that was happening.

Thursday was Che’s birthday, so the group decided to celebrate at an open air club on the beach just down the street from where we were staying. It was hot, the dance music was loud, and it just so happened to be ladies night, which filled the club with beautiful women. After about a half hour on the dance floor, my clothes were saturated with sweat. The DJ spun a lot of reggae, but eventually played some techno, fully loaded with bright strobe lights and a smoke machine that blanketed everyone dancing. Insanity came loose and all the people really dug into it. I let it come over me for a few hours and suddenly I became exhausted. I went outside to cool off and have a smoke. Sarah, Daniel and I decided to swim naked in the ocean to cool off. We hopped in just down the way from the club, and once in the water, something weird happened. Any kind of movement made our bodies light up from the glowing bacteria in the water. Walking on the beach looked like pixie dust was falling from our feet. We got dressed and went back in the club. The bar eventually closed at about two-thirty. We walked back to the B&B and talked about how we just had the greatest night.

The week in Flamingo was great, and was a nice ending to my three weeks time in Costa Rica. The last night there the group gathered on the beach to soak in the sunset and give ourselves one last time to Costa Rica. The journey was spiritual. I witnessed humanity in Costa Rica, from the random people I encountered, to the family I lived with for two weeks. The people of Costa Rica are fantastic. This was something I will never forget.
