We visited several areas (departamentos) within El Salvador and stayed at the Grecia Real which is located near the center of San Salvador.  It's a small walk to the shops and their service is the greatest.  Although it is not a very big hotel they treat you as though you were staying at a 5 star.

San Salvador is the capital of El Salvador and has started to see more tourism since the end of a 12 year civil war.  The city is populated with great shpping centers and other tourist sites.  We went shopping at "La Cascadas" mall with family and later visited and stayed with family in Colonia Las Mercedes.
