Oops! We slept in – forgot the time difference and got a shock when Jane knocked on our door saying it was time to check out. All was fine though, we had our briefing, met the rest of our group and picked up our 4x4 and camping gear. Dan took to the wheel for the off road driving - I thought it was be too scary but he thoroughly enjoyed it. I couldn’t understand why everyone raves about Fraser Island the thought of spending a few days on such a remote island and camping just didn’t really appeal but when you see how beautiful this sand island is then you understand. We couldn’t swim in the sea (being Australian waters it was full of dangerous creatures) but we stopped off a two lakes, Lake Wabby which was our favourite and Lake McKenzie. Both lakes lay on sandy banks so it was just like being on a beach but the water was clearer and obviously not salty. We learned the hard way that it is good to get to your camp site before dark to set up and not have extra time playing in the water. We joined the other group from our hostel both nights when camping and had a great laugh with them. We climbed Indian Head to take in the views over the nearby bays and of the waters, spotting a mother whale and her baby swimming along and two turtles. Another key spot where we stopped was Eli creek where you walk along a raised platform hop in the water and drift slowly back down to the beach – was fairly cold but refreshing.
