After a few days in South Wales, we drove up to Liverpool, birthplace of that one band . . .what were they called again?

My favorite night there was Christmas Eve.  Dai randomly and unexpectedly asked if I wanted to go to church for Christmas Eve, and we had passed the gianormous Anglican cathedral a few times before, so I was really excited about going to see the inside as well as the Anglican pageantry.  It was really foggy that night, and the cathedral looked absolutlely ethereal all lit up from precisely pointed lighting.  The service itself embodied what I like so much about liturgical type churches now as compared to the more happy clappy services I used to go to, and that is I don't feel like anyone is trying to sell me religion.  It is the opposite of the consumerist model of seeker friendly evangelical churches here in the States (which have their place), but basically, in liturgical services, you can take it or leave it.  You read, you respond, you sit, stand, sit, wish peace to those around you, take the wafer and the wine if you want to, and all these structured elements allow for room to breathe and to feel, for a few moments, that you are connected to all those who have come before and who are still to come, and in that there is comfort and peace and joy.
