In which we get told off by some freakish old men in a piss soaked hell hole.

This entry is the second to not contain much but I intend to cover every place we visit regardless. We had intended to wine taste in Havelock North because of the amount of winaries it has, however, we found out when we got there that they were actually shut. We had by this time paid for the night in the hostel though so we decided to move on the day after.

The hostel is worth mentioning though, it was called 'Peak Backpackers' and it used to be an elderly folks home, for this reason the entire place stank of piss and dead people. It had a very depressing air about it. An old bloke with dyed orange hair showed us our rooms and then got cross with me and told me that they don't take any crap from theives and vandals (despite stealing 'Lost in Translation' from the last backpackers to make up for my stolen coffee I am neither of these things). We were not allowed duvets (the reason for which was because we would probably steal them) until we asked again and were given them begrudgingly. In the toilet there was a sign that read 'I WILL CATCH WHOEVER IS SMOKING IN HERE AND YOU WILL BE MADE TO LEAVE, NEIL'. (Neil is the manager, not the smoker). Everyone else there looked to be on crack and overall it was a very threatening and odd place. Jake summed it up when he found a map called 'an upside down map of the world'.

Old men getting angry at us for being 'vandals and theives'.

We found an old Irish pub here and that became our local for the day.

When we left the day after I pulled down the smoking sign but couldn't find a pen to replace it with a new sign saying 'PLEASE SMOKE' which was gutting.

That same day we drove to Napier to do the wine tasting!
