English Exam day
From Hambantota Adventures! in Hambantota, Sri Lanka on Dec 05 '07
It’s Satishya’s birthday today! (One of the teacher’s children) We iced her a cake which was eaten funnily before lunch. But all enjoyed especially by the special girl herself! There is a tradition that the person with the birthday goes round giving the adults a bite of their piece of cake! We didn’t mind, but random all the same! This morning was Christmas trees and many many scales for fishes.
Finally crunch day came after our hard work of preparing the test papers and trying to make sure they were kept to the correct level for our pupils we each teach. Pressure was on, even felt nerves go! So hard not to help them out when they got stuck, but they did have the Sinhalese for the instructions of each question, so in theory there shouldn’t be a problem! Was quite hard to discipline them, when other teachers kept helping them out and they were getting up to borrow rubbers/colouring pencils and sharpeners! Well as long as they tried to complete the papers.
We marked them that evening and had some interesting results to say the least. Some need to learn their numbers as well as colours! Let alone the rest of the paper! Questions I thought would be easy for them, for most didn’t try to write answers for. Think there’s a different culture here, in if you can’t think of the answer quickly skip it rather than guessing and maybe luckily getting some questions correct! Either that or got bored of the questions, the amount and got distracted by the noise around them and wanting to play outside! Probably both! Good effort for most of them though, which will be presented to them at the start of next year, when the return after the holidays. Hope they remember!
