I was in a good mood in Khajuraho so I found it really interesting. It is, another one dimensional tourist town, but the main draw card, the temples, didn't disappoint. They are Hindu temples famous for the their intricate sculpture, specifically the naked female form. The temples are also unsuitable for children, the observant ones anyway, as some of the friezes feature scenes of heterosexual, homosexual and lesbian sex, threesomes, foursomes and even bestiality! Somehow though it isn't really startling or offensive as the age of temples and their general beauty keep the mood respectful. It is actually a complex of temples set within a large park which was completely deserted when we were there. It made it really nice to be alone and in silence for a couple of hours. Though our hotel also had a nice garden and gardener who kept me supplied with fresh guava.

I guess the combination of these quiet places kept me sane as because the shopkeepers of Khajuraho started to get annoying. I don't really mind being asked to buy something or see their shop because it's easy to just say no but it's shame that it is impossible just to have a simple conversation with someone. Anyone who says anything to you in India wants to get money out of you. That's to be expected because this is a very poor country and with our new packs, western clothes and white faces we are obvious targets it's just that I would love to meet a real local and have an honest conversation with them. I consider myself a social animal and I miss simple interaction in India. Foe me there are 3 reasons to travel, for the people, the places and the things. In India the places and the things are unbelievable so it's sad that the people are effectively missing. Before I started this blog entry I was going to say that I don't like the people here but would have just been frustration talking, the real complaint would be that I haven't really met any of the people.

Of course the over-priced goods and services would only cost us cents but it's the principle and the fact that no-one wants to talk to you once they realise you don't want to buy what they are selling. Even the man who helped a friend get his bags on the bus asked for 5 rupees! But I digress.
Our experience in Khajuraho was generally good and we will leave with positive memories and some great photos, of the orgies carved into the temples. Next stop one of Indias most photographed places Varanasi.
