This stop was my last in Italy and my best. I could wax lyrical about it. I headed off the beaten track (as much as you can in Italy), to an engaging  little fishing village called Camogli (still on the Italian Riviera). Not as crowded as the Cinque Terre, but filled with sun seeking locals and families with children slurping on gelati along the waterfront. I really liked this town. On one side there's a grey pebble beach with crystalline, aqua water and a cute church. On the other side there's a harbour lined with little restaurants and gellateria (I had the best cinnamon gelato). From here I caught a ferry around the promontory to pocket-sized San Frutuoso.

San Frutuoso consists of a stone abbey, a couple of trattorias and two perfect, shimmering, aqua bays. I used this hidden cove as my starting point for a hike around the Portofino promontory to Portofino the town (about two hours). Portofino is of course the place best known as a playground for the well heeled, and boring as bat shit :)....but the hike was just stunning - unspoilt coastline, sea to infinity, the scent of wildflowers, with hardly a soul in sight.......ahhhhh.
