A few laidback days before our long hike was just what we needed and Wanaka fit the bill. It’s the more laid back version of Queenstown. It’s set at the edge of Lake Wanaka and we chose to go on a short steep hike on the Diamond Lake trail which gave us great views of the lake below and to the mountains toward Mount Aspiring National Park. I wore the day pack this time so that I could get used to the weight in preparation for Milford.
The weather was just lovely the entire time here and we spent our next day lounging at the beach with a book (yes, this is Scott’s second attempt at book reading). We made an effort to hit the local micro brewery but found out too late that it was closed on Sundays. No worries as a café along the water serves it up and we enjoyed one while relaxing and taking in the views.

Next we are off to Queenstown where we start our Milford Trek…..
