Our second outing from La Serena was to visit Reserva Nacional Pingüino de Humboldt. We did a fascinating full day excursion. It started off by driving to the small fishing village of Caleta Punta Choros, which is 122 kilometers north of La Serena. From here we visited the Islands of Choros and Damas, which together form part of the Reserva Nacional Pingüino de Humboldt. From the beach we set off in a small-motorized fishing boat to see the exciting wildlife that can be found here. The only thing that we had been guaranteed to see was Humboldt Penguins, so everything else was a big bonus. The boat navigated around three islands, but it was mostly around Isla Damas that we saw animals. All in all we spotted: Humboldt Penguins, Peruvian Booby, Peruvian Pelican, Neotropic Cormorant, Red-legged Cormorant, American Oyster Catcher, Kelp Gul, Bottlenose dolphins, Marine otter and South American Sea lions.

Not bad for a day at sea!
