Fun in the Sun!
From Aussie Travels in Perth, Australia on Jan 03 '08
Hey guys.
We've has a quieter few days as we are trying to save our pennies as we have diving next week then our big trip. No photo's this time either- sorry stupid computer isn't playing ball.
We went to Cottesloe beach yesterday though for a bit of a picnic, then a swim. English beaches don't even come close. It was white sand and blue sea. After quite some persuasion that the sea wasn't THAT cold, Tori finally got Ben in the sea where he was like a little kid having the best time in the world body-surfing the waves. Tori on the other hand nearly drowned! We both came home a little salt-crusty and a bit burnt. It was a fun trip though and it blew away the city cobwebs. We both commented on how lucky we were to be able to sit and relax in such a beautiful place with the sound of the ocean in the background.
Friday night was a little quieter- just a pizza and a few beers in the hostel- well at least it started that way until we got dragged onto a few drinking games with our fellow hostelees (probably the thieving gits who stole our food, but we put our differences aside for the ske of alcohol). Being the classy backpackers we are, there beong no cups in the hostel we drank wine out of old beer bottles and one particularly classy lasy had hers out of a gherkin jar (don't say we're not over here doing it in style!) We retired before it got too messy- sadly the others didn't. Tori was woken at 5am in the morning as the northern monkeys were trying to batter down the corrugated iron fence to get in (we guess they forgot thier code- it's nice to know Brits abroad always behave with decourum).
Saturday was meant to be an early start but the sleepy heads won again and we finally crawled out of our pit (which we shared last night with the world's biggest moth and several blood thirsty mosquitos) at about 10.30. Plenty of time to get to Freemantle by lunch....Freemantle is a little port town just down the coast from Perth. The locals rave about the markets there so we thought we'd check it out. It was a bit camden-esqe- there were a few street perfomers and a range of stalls selling anything from fruit, jewellery to tat. It was worth a visit though (luckily nothing much caught our eye though and we were saved having to break the bank). We had a little wander along the coast (there's only a small beach here) and saw some famous flag thing that they use to welcome the ships in.
Ben found his new favourite place too while we were there. Down by the harbour there is a huge range of fish n chip places and boutique bars where you can sit and grab a beer over-looking the water. Ben found 'Little Creatures' Freemantle's very own pub AND brewery all in one! It was pretty cool. You choose a beer from one of the big silver brewer things then you can sit back and watch them hard at work making it (behind a glass screen)- photos on the way.... Apparently the place used to be a croc farm so there's a big suspended walkway all the way around the warehouse that looks down on the bar. You can walk round and see below into the brewery. A very pleasant way to spend an afternoon (apart from the yeasty smell that is).
Think we WILL have a quite night tonight- thinking of maybe treating ourselves to a meal out in Northbridge- we have cooked in our hellish kitchen all week (well when we had food left to cook with that wasn't stolen). Maybe cheapy noodles, amybe something more exotic, we have china town just down the road and quite a few restaurants with tanks of lobster in the window (Tori is dying to get here hand on a thermidored one- very reasonable here- Ben is convinced this is a cruel and savage act- he'd rather kill a cow!!!) No plans for tomorrow but we have been told that "the Sunday Session' is something worth doing. As far as we can work out this means finding your bar of choice, be it on the beach or in town, and taking advantage of the all you can drink deals before seeing a new week in....we'll see!
Hope you're all well xx
