For me, Cancun is the ideal holiday destination. Admttedly, the hotel zone is a bit commercial and consists of nothing more than swanky hotels and shopping malls, but there is so much to see and do in and around the area that you can't fail to have a good time. Highlights for me included taking a 12 seater plane out to the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza followed by a drive to a "real" Mexican village for a Mexican lunch with traditional Mayan dancing; snorkelling at Xel Ha; driving a speedboat and snorkelling at the world's second largest barrier reef on the jungle tour; ruins, beaches and iguanas at Tulum; watching the Mexican show at Xcaret; taking the boat out to Isla Mujeres to swim with dolphins and dancing the night away with balloons and bubbles at Coco Bongo nightclub. For those days where all you want to do is relax, the beaches are lovely with cool white sand and turquoise seas. Even better was the fact that at our hotel a waiter would constantly come and bring you free drink! I don't know his name but, to the waiter on the beach at the Riu Palace Las Americas, I love you and thank you!
