We arrived in Boston mid-afternoon, to some nice traditional British weather, it was pouring with rain. We managed to fumble our way through the subway system with relative success, only to find that our hostel was no longer running the free pick-up service that we had been relying on. No problem, I figured I could remember where we were heading from the maps that I had looked at before we left, so we decided to walk...

...In my defence, I did find the main street I was looking for with relative ease. We did head in the wrong direction for a while, but then realised our mistake and headed the right way. Unfortunately, we missed the hotel, as we were looking in the right, not the left, and continued up the road for a good mile or so. After eventually swallowing my pride and asking for directions, we stumbled into the hostel after about 2 hours of walking, both absolutely knackered. It wasn't long before we were both asleep.

Anyway, the last two days we have spent walking Boston, in very pleasant sunny conditions. Even Hannah has got a bit of suntan! On the first day we walked through the main part of the city, before embarking on the Freedom Trail, taking in many of the city historical sites, finishing up at the oldest US navy ship, the USS Constitution. On day two, we headed to Harvard, and had a walk around the campus, very nice, but no York! In the afternoon we had a drink at 'Cheers', a must for all visitors I feel. Over two days we have covered at about 15 miles on foot, covering pretty much all of the city, from Downtown to the Theatre District, and beyond. Boston is a very clean and friendly city, and I feel has been perfect to ease us into our trip.

Today is Sunday, we are going to head to the Boston Common to relax this afternoon, before catching a night train to Washington DC this evening. Not sure how easy it will be to sleep on the train, so it could be an interesting journey. See you in Capitol City!

Hi guys, you've not met us but I've been browsing through your blogs and they've been really interesting. My fiance and two of our mates are starting our travels in October of this year and I was going to ask you (Hannah) how have you managed to pack nice clothes (by that I mean stuff that isn't all boring trekking stuff), how long have you been away for and how have you budgeted for your trip? Any advice would be most welcome! Thank you! Alice, Southampton/Brighton
