Made one the best decisions of the trip in deciding to visit Tikal in time for the sunrise. It was just magical!
The walk through the park at night was incredibly atmospheric. All of the temples in the central plaza were spookily illuminated by moonlight and the wildlife was out in force. Including a Tarantula hiding in its hole just by the path and an absolutely massive white spider hanging down from its thread. Which, much to the amusement of Hazel, I nearly walked straight into.
Sunrise at Tikal
As for the sunrise itself... I don’t have the words to describe. Sitting on top of Temple IV with the rainforest spread below us and Howler Monkeys screeching away in the distance as the sun slowly rose was just one of the best things I have ever done. To make things even more special, it was the week before Winter Solstice and the sun rose directly inline with Temple III. The Mayans really knew their astronomy!
