Great Surf!
From Australia in Byron Bay, Australia on Apr 20 '06
Heading into Byron bay we thought it was time to go back to nature and do a spot of camping (in other words we were too poor to stay anywhere else). We stayed in this campsite called the 'Arts factory' which had this hippy feel to it. Setting up camp right next to a stagnant lake where mosqitos had a fond taste for our blood and a huge, and I mean HUGE, lizard kept staring me out, wasn't the smartest choice we've ever made. As always the tents were put up in the dark due to our bad planning. Afterwards we went out to the town to hunt out a box of wine to find out everywhere was closed. We decided to head back to our camp and get bitten some more and threatened by a lizard.
The next day we got up early to go down to the beach where apparently the waves were really good. 30 minutes of a walk with our bodyboards later we came to 'Tallow Beach'. Tallow beach was famous for its big waves and on this day they were said to be particularly big. They were were dangerously high! After braving the waves I thought I was doing pretty dam good until the largest wave yet came along. It had to be at least 2.5m high. Lucky me, I was situated just in the right place when all of a sudden I was pretty much 'duncked'. Take a deep breath and hope I come out alright was the best idea. Being sucked under is one thing but being sucked under by a wave of this magnitude is another. Thinking I was going to drown, aswell as half the people on the beach I managed to surface, only to find someone most really hate me. Another wave came along reminding me what the bottom of the ocean floor feels like. After this little episode, I thought it wise retire for today and to seek land only to do it all again tomorrow.
