Today Michelle, Steve, Nicole, Indira and I went to Big Rock Falls. The falls are located in the Mountain Pine Ridge National Park which is South of San Ignacio and running parallel to the border with Guatemala. The Mountains here represent some of the oldest rocks in Belize, formed by Granite and limestone, which has led to some incredible caves and waterfalls.  We drove to Big Rock through Santa Elena and along the Christo Rey road, we stopped off at Christo Rey to see Nicole and Steves house. Where they live is so pretty, Christo Rey is a really small village, located on the Macal River. Steve and Nicoles yard has a stream and waterfalls runnning through it where you can swim too.

Moving on from Christo Rey we soon passed through the village of San Antonio, we do a lot of projects in this area, esp conservation at the Eligio Panti National Park (named after Don Eligio Panti, a famous Maya curandero- healer) Many of the villagers in San Antonio are desendants of the Yucatec Maya.

The falls were beautiful and we all went swimming in the pools

The drive up to Big Rock Falls was windy to say the least, but we got there eventually after missing the turning twice! Once parked we had a STEEP hike down to the falls, at one point we had to hang onto a wire and go down on our butts, it was so much fun! The hike was worth it though, the falls were breathtaking, and yet again a photo really doesn't do it any justice. We all stripped off to our swimming gear and jumped right in, the water was so cold, straight from the mountains. It was amazing to swim underneath the waterfall, but the rapids from pool to pool were really strong!
