Trekking and Tubing
From Bula Baby!!! in Suva, Fiji on Jul 25 '06
We made the most of the continental breakfast that was included. We all piled back on to the green machine and left the Coral Coast. We stopped at Pacific Harbour to buy ourselves some lunch. We were then dropped off on the side of a road and got in a truck which took us to the start of a 3 hour trek to the Navua River. The pressure was on!! Lloyd and his competitive nature, and Hannah, donning her aerobics gear, were both up for knocking some time off of the 3 hours.
The weather was changeable - some pretty heavy spells of rain (I guess we were in the rain forest!) made the going pretty slippery and a few tumbles were taken!
The 2 of us and Hannah were the first to complete the trek - in under 2 hours (girl power!!)
We had all been told to wear trainers as the trek included 1/2 hour in a river, up to our shins in water - great fun! The 2 of us and Hannah were the first to complete the trek - in under 2 hours (girl power!!) We emerged at the river bank and even beat the boat that was carrying our lunch!
It was definitely one of the best walks we have done! Once everybody had crossed the finish line and after lunch, we jumped fully clothed into the cold water and rubber tubes and went tubing down the river. We were even able to catch a few rapids! It was freezing cold but so much fun!
The tubing led us to a waterfall, we climbed some steps to the middle level of the falls and threw ourselves into the freezing pools. Te climbed the rocks and threw himself in from the top - very impressive; a few of the others on the bus climbed a little way up too but by this time, everybody was frozen!
We got in a long boat and had a 30 min ride back to the green machine. We got colder and wetter as we kept having water fights with the other boat!
We arrived in Suva mid-afternoon where we were given a brief tour of Fiji's capital city. This included a stop outside the government buildings - a good photo opportunity with the 'miserable' guard standing outside!
That night, we stayed at Rain Tree Lodge, 10km outside of Suva. We were told that the 'green bus family' would be going into Suva for some food and a bit of night life. We didn't really feel like it - too used to doing our own thing! We chose to eat at the lodge and it was a good thing we did! By a complete coincidence we bumped into Becky and Mike who we last saw in Wanaka, NZ! We had dinner with them and spent the evening catching up on each others' news. They were camping at the same place as us and had put their tent up under a coconut tree.......say no more!!
