On Saturday June 3, Rick and Amie and the 2 of us boarded an overnight ferry from Ancona Italy to Split Croatia. We were all impressed that OJ didn't toss his cookies. A heavy storm was brewing and the waves tossed the boat around quite a bit until about 2 am. We slept in a tiny cabin with 4 bunks and a sink - the 10 hour ferry ride didn't seem so bad at all - once we were all sleeping!

The weather wasn't ideal for lounging on the beach (which had been our plan for this leg of the trip). 'Island hopping' is the thing to do in the Dalmatia region of Croatia, so we took a 45 minutes ferry ride out to a nearby island, Brač, and miraculously, we had hot sunny weather for an afternoon. It was truly glorious after all the chilly days in Rome. Rick and OJ braved the cold water and went for a swim in the clear turquoise Adriatic sea.

The old-town area of Split was very charming with caffes, bars and shops spilling out into the narrow cobblestone streets. We ate seafood and explored the ancient Roman palace (it was actually built by a Roman emperor as his retirement home!).
