The Acropolis

Athens is crowded, congested and about like any other gigantic city you've ever visited. However, the city itself is not what you came for. You came for the Acropolis and the overall sense gained from spending a few days in a place so ancient and hallowed. From way up high on the Acropolis, you might look down over the city of Athens and wonder, did Socrates stand in this very spot?
Aside from the spectacular view of Athens, for me, the most splendid part of the Acropolis is the Erecthion. This temple sits on the most sacred site of the ancient city, the spot where Poseidon and Athena had their contest over who would become Patron of the city. Poseidon thrust his trident into the rock and a spring burst forth, while Athena touched the ground with a spear and an olive tree grew. Athena was declared the victor, and the great city of Athens was named in her honor.

The Erecthion contains the porch of the maidens, or Caryatids, which are now copies, four of which have been place in the Acropolis Museum. The fifth resides in the British Museum, taken more than a century ago by Lord Elgin. I think Britain should give it back!
