Day 50: Parc Asterix
From Diary of a five year old backpacker! in Plailly, France on Aug 14 '06
We all enjoyed Paris, another of our favorite cities. The damp, cool weather didn’t affect our days here and Billy is keen to race up the Eiffel tower again.
Parc Asterix is about 30 minutes out of Paris, which after a few laps of the roads to find the right route, we arrive. And its early and the car parks filling to the max. Parc Asterix is set out in a forest, unlike other theme parks that grow from a paddock and is built up from scratch. We had great weather for the day, approx 24oC and overcast. Will, and now Billy are mad Asterix and Oberlix cartoon fans, knowing all the characters with names like Getafix, Chief Vitalstatistix, Gerriatrix, a dog called Dogmatix etc…. And Kimmy knows nothing and this park is in French so she’s settling in for a bizarre day. Billy is squealing with delight before we get tickets.
“That would have hurt”
We rode on a boat cruise, dodgems, spinning things (no tea cups!!) a few roller coasters, a spooky ride called Le Transdemonium which we queued for over 20 minutes in claustrophobic tunnels and stairwells, only to ride a kiddy rollercoaster past some things ghostly/funny, or skeletons with with spooky stuff that could be shreaded toilet rolls…and they had eyes that glowed. Billy was anxious, Will and Kimmy just smirked and nominated this ride for Tool of the Day.
Parc Asterix lunch was a Poseidon meal of a baguette with a strange name filled with salad and thon/tuna, a bag of potato chips and coke. Next we watched Les Gaulois accuellent les Villages, a show with all the characters singing and dancing around, the audience loved it and know all the songs. Billy was rapt and we figured it must be funny, and quite entertaining. More rides, then we walked behind a mobile Viking ship squirting water and loaded with seriously funny Vikings trying to be serious. When it stopped we witnessed the hilarious “Les Vikings”, sitting front row. These Vikings were amazingly funny and staged fights and lots of biffo and falls, singing and acting up. The stunt guys fell and rolled right up to Billy, who turned with a grin said “That would have hurt”
Next stop was the Dauphins/Dolphins Show with over ten dolphins doing amazing things; even better than anything we had seen before. The Dolphins could flick balls to the crowd, throw their trainers into the air and put on a great performance. After over 7 hours here we were Asterixed out, got the requisite souvenirs and went to our hotel in Surveilliers. Starving, we went out for a supermarket dinner, but the exquisite little town was shuttered for the evening. So went the opposite direction and found big food barns. We went to Buffalo Grill and had bison and buffalo burgers and sundaes. Great end to a great day!!
