Chapter 5: Sacred Crocodiles

Our first short (day) trip out of the city happened a couple weeks ago, but we never got around to posting about it. We went to see sacred crocodiles!! They are said to be sacred because their faith is linked with that of the village people, in the village of Bazoulé. Whenever a crocodile dies, it is said, an old person from the village dies as well. They are also caracterized by the fact that they suppositively do not attack humans. Part of the experience is actually having a seat on one of the crocodiles (the biggest one). Jan and I both did it, though the crocodile started moving a few seconds after Jan sat down so it was a little scary. Also, one can buy a live chicken a feed it to the crocodiles. Suppositively it is the only way to initially get them out of the water. I think it's the smell of all the humans by the shore that gets them moving. :) We bought the chicken, and then felt bad for it cause he kept being used as bait, and then he'd get set free and try to run away from the guide and the crocodile in what appeared to be a panic state (i guess the term "running like a chicken with his head cut off" comes to mind). In the end, the crocodile devoured the chicken. Unfortunately, we don't have many pics of all this cause the camera decided to stop working right as we were about to sit on the crocodiles. :(

I sat on a crocodile!

As you see, we also encountered some turtles doing the nasty. It was very nice to get out of the city. :)

classic shot of the turtles, guys. one for the scrapbook, eh? and as for the chicken, he/she looks mighty skinny.. poor thing! from the pictures, the landscape seems very remote, no one else there with you.. must be great to take a breather from the city! some footage of burkina faso was on tv this week, and i was thinking of you two! definitely take as many opportunities to go out and about in the countryside if you can.. take photos for vicariously experiencing travellers like me. ;) sciskam

My camera's LCD screen stopped working a few weeks ago... damn! couldn't it have happened before the trip? Now all I have is a point and shoot digital camera that doesn't show pictures... I think I will ask one of you to buy me a new one in Canada and import it here with the next arriving volunteer...

" Jeśli nie chcesz mojej zguby, krokodyla kup mi luby " to cytat z Zemsty Aleksandra Fredry, nie wiem czy znacie, ale mi sie z krokodylem kojarzy... Krokodyle sa podobno bardzo szybkie? Te Wasze wygladaja mi na lekko oswojone, czy mam racje? Caluje mocno.

Where the hell is Croc Dundee when you need him (or that other Aussie Steve...)! Can someone explain how crocodiles got from Africa to Australia, or vice versa?!
Sounds like fun. I would gladly swipe the cocroach with a croc as house pet... I wonder if their skin is thick enough to last through winter...
Send us more green pictures (somehow)...we're craving them too out in the cold West! Thanks for letting me forget about the 'W' word (not Bush) for a while...
Gros bisous a vous deux et aux petits! Tio Juan!
